Elon Volleyball Defeats Charlotte 3-1, Wins Tournament

DURHAM, N.C. – The Elon Phoenix volleyball team defeated Charlotte 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22) to claim the Hilton RTP/NCCU Tournament title hosted by N.C. Central in Durham, N.C. The title marks the first time that Elon has won its’ opening tournament under head coach Mary Tendler. Elon is now 3-1 on the season.
The freshman had a successful showing this afternoon with Traci Stewart being named to the all-tournament team and Carolina Lemke being named the tournament MVP. Lemke finished the tournament with 35 kills, three assists, eight digs, one service ace and four assisted blocks. Stewart recorded 38 kills, one service ace, 32 digs, one solo block and three assisted blocks to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
The first set saw the Phoenix string together six consecutive points to gain a 7-5 lead before Charlotte came back to tie the game at nine. The teams battled, tying four more times. With the score knotted at 21, Charlotte’s Kathleen Hicks recorded a service error that gave Elon a one-point lead. Elon controlled the rest of the set and won 25-23 off a service error by Charlotte’s Courtney Cowles.
The 49ers opened set two by scoring nine of the first 10 points. The Phoenix answered with a four-point run to bring the score to 9-5. A kill by Stewart tied the set at 11. The teams kept the score close for the remainder of the set before Charlotte’s Priscilla Barbanell notched the set-winning kill to give the 49ers a 25-21 win.
The third set started with seven ties before either team got into double-digits. A Lemke kill gave the Phoenix its’ 10th point of the match. The set remained close until sophomore Sarah Schermerhorn recorded four service aces to put the set away for the Phoenix, 25-19.
The fourth and final set saw another heated battle between the teams with teams trading points on the opening five plays. With the score knotted at 11, Charlotte scored on two consecutive plays to give them a 13-11 edge. Elon took the lead for good on a kill by Stewart. Lemke capped off her superior tournament performance with a kill that gave Elon its’ 25th point and clinched the match and tournament for the Phoenix.
Lemke led the team offensively with 12 kills in the match. Stewart tallied a .375 hitting percentage after notching 11 kill. Schermerhorn recorded six service aces in the victory. Emily Regan paced the offense with 29 assists.
Defensively for the Phoenix, it was Stewart who shined, recording a team-leading nine digs. The team finished the afternoon with eight blocks, including three by Schermerhorn. Lemke also recorded two solo blocks.
Charlotte had three players in double-digit kills. Kaitlin Knight recorded 14, Kara Rake ended 12, and Hicks recorded 11. Despite the lofty numbers, Elon’s defense held the 49ers to a .164 hitting percentage.
Prior to winning the championship game, Elon fell to Florida Gulf Coast 0-3 (18-25, 18-25, 16-25). Elon was held to a .177 hitting percentage, while the Eagles enjoyed a mark of .419. Highlighting the offensive production for Elon was Stewart who was eight-for-nine with four errors for a hitting percentage of .444. She also led the team defensively with 14 digs. Freshman Megan McMahon finished the match with 13 assists, while Regan added 10.
Elon will return to the court next weekend when it welcomes Campbell, UNC Wilmington and North Carolina A&T to Alumni Gym for the third annual Elon Volleyball Classic. The first match is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5 at 4:30 p.m. and will feature North Carolina A&T and UNC Wilmington.
