ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s soccer team will be playing for the Southern Conference regular-season championship when it heads up the road to perennial league favorite UNC Greensboro on Thursday, October 29 at 7 p.m. After a trip to Charleston this past weekend yielded wins over The Citadel and College of Charleston, the Phoenix moved into second place, one game behind the first-place Spartans.
Elon (12-4-2, 7-2-1) has won the most-ever games since moving to the Division I ranks in 1999 and the most games since the 1996 team finished 12-5-2. No Phoenix women’s soccer squad has won a SoCon title and before this year no team had won more than five D-I conference games in a season.
In Thursday’s contest at UNCG, the Phoenix will be looking for its first-ever win over the Spartans. The Spartans have come away victorious in all 13 meetings against Elon and has also won three consecutive SoCon regular-season crowns and four of the last five.
During its record-breaking season, Elon has posted seven shutouts and allowed only 13 goals. Senior goalkeeper Sydney Little ranks second in the conference and 25th in the country with a 0.62 goals against average. Freshman Liz Palmer tops the SoCon charts with 11 assists and ranks ninth in the nation in assists per game (0.61). Elon has a very balanced attack as 13 players have tallied at least two points this year. Senior Molly Calpin leads all scorers with six goals, five that have been game-winners.
With a win on Thursday, the Phoenix will clinch the SoCon title as well as earn the right to host the Southern Conference Tournament Nov. 6-8. In a format change this season, only four teams make the postseason tournament with the top seed serving as the host.
Elon students can cheer the team on to victory as the Department of Athletics will be offering a bus ride to Greensboro on Thursday. For $5, students will receive a game ticket, dinner from Honeybaked Ham and a ride to and from the game.
