6. Elon
Starters Returning
OFFENSE: 6
DEFENSE: 8
Overview
Pete Lembo will have to replace a considerable amount of production, with quarterback Wes Pope (16 touchdowns) and NFL Draft pick linebacker Chad Nkang (127 tackles) now gone. Redshirt Freshman Donny Kirby, a highly touted high school player, is expected to take over for Pope. All-American wide receiver Terrell Hudgins (8 touchdowns) and senior Michael Mayers (866 yards) both return, giving Kirby two proven, game-changing targets. Senior guard Charles Porterfield anchors a line that returns three starters from last year. Chris Werden, David Harrison, John Rubertone and Mark Hoffer round out the rest of the line. Fullback Tim Applegate (19 yards) also returns. Junior linebacker Corey Weaver (93 tackles) is the top returning tackler and the best player on defense. He will be joined by Daronce Daniels (54 tackles) and Zach McAlister (46 tackles) at linebacker. These players must replace the production of Nkang by committee. Eric Ludwig (24 tackles) and Tim Happer (29 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss) provide the most experience among returning defensive linemen. The strength of the unit should be the secondary with former high school All-American Andreas Platt coming in from Duke and Irvin Raglin (51 tackles, 1interception), Karlos Sullivan (38 tackles, 2 interceptions, 7 pass break ups) and safety Chris Bland (4 interceptions) all returning. Special teams will be one of the best units in the league with the return of All-SoCon kicker Andrew Wilcox (12-18 FG) and punter Brandon Lane (42.4 average).
Top Players: QB Donny Kirby, Fr.; WR Michael Mayers, Sr.; WR Terrell Hudgins, Soph.; C Charles Porterfield, Sr.; OLB Corey Weaver, Elon, Jr.; SS Chris Bland, Sr.; FS Andreas Platt, Jr.; K Andrew Wilcox, Elon, Soph.; P Brandon Lane, Elon, Jr..
Prediction
For Elon to have winning record, they will have to pull off an upset early on or win a major road game or two in conference play. A four or five win season should be expected, but Lembo has his work cut out for him. This program is on the up and up.
