ELON, N.C. -- Four additions to the Elon Phoenix baseball program for the 2012-13 school year have been announced by skipper Mike Kennedy. Joining the maroon and gold this fall will be infielder Antonio Alvarez (Miami, Fla./Miami Dade College), infielder Wil Leathers (Greer, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist College), left-handed pitcher Brandon Kacer (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto HS) and outfielder Aaron Schuerman (Delphos, Ohio/Triton College).
Alvarez, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, began his collegiate career at North Carolina State where he appeared in 10 games in 2011. At Miami Dade in 2012, Alvarez appeared in 30 contests, hitting .299 with 24 runs scored, one homer, 19 RBI and seven stolen bases. The 5'10", 190-pound Alvarez played his prep ball at Florida Christian Academy for Ernie Padron. As a prep he earned third-team All-Dade honors from The Miami Herald after hitting .400 with one home run, 25 RBI and 18 stolen bases as a senior. Following his junior campaign he was named a second-team All-Dade selection by The Miami Herald. Alvarez was rated as the No. 59 prospect in the state of Florida in the class of 2010 by Perfect Game USA.
Antonio is the son of Jose and Wanda Alvarez.
Leathers will have three years of eligibility remaining after enrolling at Elon. He started his career at South Carolina where he red-shirted in 2011 before heading to Spartanburg Methodist. At SMC Leathers hit .368 with 44 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, three homers and 25 RBI in 40 games. He also stole nine bases in 10 attempts in 2012 as the program won the Region X title and advanced to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. As a prep with Mark Kish's Riverside High program Leathers earned all-region accolades in both 2009 and 2010. He also collected all-state honors in 2010 and was a SC/NC Select All-Star. Coming out of high school Leathers was rated as the No. 426 prep prospect in the nation and the ninth-best high school prospect in South Carolina by PG Crosschecker. Diamond Prospects ranked him as the top second baseman in South Carolina in the class of 2010.
Wil, who is 5'8" and 170 pounds, is the son of David and Robin Leathers.
Kacer, who stands 6'2" and is 200 pounds, compiled a 4-3 record with a 1.95 ERA and 60 strikeouts for Danny Smith's Miami Palmetto program last year. A team captain, Kacer earned all-tournament honors at the Sarasota Baseball Classic.
Brandon is the son of Mark and Debbie Kacer.
Schuerman also has two years of eligibility remaining after starting his collegiate career at Indiana Tech. As a freshman at Indiana Tech he appeared in 44 games, hitting .471 with one double, one triple and four RBI. He was successful on 17 of his 19 stolen base attempts that season. After red-shirting in 2011, the 6'0", 195-pound Schuerman appeared in 43 games with Triton in 2012. Last year he hit a team-best .409 with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs and 34 RBI. He also scored 35 runs and was a perfect 21-for-21 in stolen bases. As a prep at Delphos Jefferson High Schuerman set program records for most stolen bases in a season (19) and in a career (34). The speedy Schuerman boasts a 40-yard dash time of 4.42 seconds. His performance helped his prep squad finish as the regional runner-up in both 2008 and 2009. Also a standout on the football field, Schuerman set a program record with 305 rushing yards and six touchdowns in one contest.
