ELON, N.C. – The Elon baseball team and head coach Mike Kennedy have announced the addition eight players for the 2014 season. Joining the maroon and gold will be: shortstop Travis Docimo (Stamford, Conn./Stamford HS), right-handed pitcher Mike Krill (Berkeley Lake, Ga./Saint Pius X HS), right-handed pitcher Josean Lazaro (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Palm Beach CC), right-handed pitcher Joe McGillicuddy (Fairfax, Va./Louisburg College), catcher Nick Mira (Miami, Fla./Miami Killian HS), outfielder D.J. Paone (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School), left-handed pitcher Jake Stalzer (Albia, Iowa/Indian Hills CC) and third baseman/outfielder Nick Zammarelli (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln Senior HS).
Docimo (6'0", 165 lbs.) has served as team captain for Fred Kelley's Stamford program and has earned All-Central accolades. Travis is the son of former Sacred Heart University soccer player Lenny and Sandi Docimo. His brother Brandon is a member of the baseball team at Southern Connecticut State University.
Krill (6'2", 180 lbs.) was the 2012 pitching MVP for J.T. Gilbert's Saint Pius X squad. He received membership into the National Society of High School Scholars in 2011. Mike is the son of Scott and Susan Krill.
Lazaro (6'0", 180 lbs.) will come to Elon as a junior after playing his sophomore season at Palm Beach Community College. Lazaro began his collegiate career at Florida International University where he made nine appearances as a freshman. He went 3-1 and struck out 13 in 19.2 innings that season. Prior to college, Lazaro played at North Broward Prep where he was drafted in the 28th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees. His senior year he went 7-0 with a 2.52 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 58.1 innings to earn first-team all-county honors. Lazaro was honored by Browardhighschoolbaseball.com with its 2011 Pitcher of the Year award. As a junior, Lazaro went 2-0 with a 3.23 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 39 innings. His performance helped lead his prep squad to a 2011 regional title. During his career, Lazaro was selected as an honorable mention Preseason High School All-American by Perfect Game. In the classroom, Lazaro graduated with a 4.30 GPA and was a member of the Golden Key Honor Society. Josean is the son of Jose Lazaro and Gloria Betancourt.
McGillicuddy (6'1", 185 lbs.) will enter Elon as a junior following a season at Louisburg College. McGillicuddy started his collegiate career at Marshall University where he ranked second on the team with a 2.33 ERA as a true freshman. He hurled 19.1 innings over 13 appearance and was involved in a combined shutout of Tulane for the Thundering Herd. As a prep, McGillicuddy attended Woodson High where he earned second-team all-district honors in both 2010 and 2011. In 2010, the program advanced to the state quarterfinals. Joe is the son of Hugh and Bernie McGillicuddy. His twin brother, John, who also began his career at Marshall, will play baseball at High Point University.
Mira (5'11", 190 lbs.) claimed first-team all-district and second-team all-county honors as a junior. A two-time team defensive player of the year, Mira has been honored as a member of the Pefect Game Underclass honorable mention team. Mira has been a three-year starter for Angel Herrera's Miami Killian squad and helped the program to district crowns in both 2010 and 2012. In 2012, the team also captured a conference title and advanced to the regional semifinals. Nick is the son of former University of Miami All-American and two-time national champion middle linebacker George Jr. and Janet Mira. His grandfather, George Mira, Sr., was a two-time All-American quarterback at the University of Miami.
Paone (6'2", 190 lbs.) was a second-team all-area choice in 2012, an honorable mention All-Palm Beach County selection in 2011 and a first-team all-area pick in 2010. Ranked as the 181st best prospect in the nation by Perfect Game, Paone was an honorable mention Perfect Game Underclass All-American in 2012. He has been named to all-tournament teams at both the 2012 East Cobb Perfect Game Tournament and the 2012 Ft. Myers Perfect Game Tournament. D.J. is the son of Sal and Catherine Paone. He is the brother of current Elon baseball player Sam Paone.
Stalzer (6'3", 195 lbs.) will come to Elon as a junior after playing two seasons at Indian Hills Community College. At Indian Hills, Stalzer was a 2012 Region XI honorable mention pick and once earned region athlete of the week accolades in 2012. As a freshman, Stalzer went 4-2 with a 3.55 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 50.2 innings of work. He also earned Region XI Academic All-Region honors in 2012. As a prep at Albia Community High School, Stalzer earned three letters in baseball as well as all-conference accolades in both 2010 and 2011. As a senior, he went 9-5 with a 2.28 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 89.0 innings on his way to first-team all-district and first-team all-state recognition. The team caputred the 2011 district title. Stalzer claimed second-team all-district honors in 2010 after posting an 8-2 record with a 0.69 ERA and 87 strikeouts in just 61.0 innings. In 2009, he went 9-1 with a 1.92 ERA and 63 Ks in 51.0 innings. Jake is the son of Phil and Jan Stalzer.
Zammarelli (6'2", 185 lbs.) has been a three-year starter for Andrew Hallam's Lincoln Senior High team. Last season Zammarelli hit .410 and was a first-team all-division, all-state and Division 1 All-Star selection. As a sophomore, Zammarelli collected Division 1 All-Star, first-team all-division and all-state recognition after hitting .465. That same year the team captured a Northern Division title. He batted .420 as a starter in his freshman campaign. Nick is the son of former College of the Holy Cross baseball player Nick and Lisa Zammarelli.
