8th or 9th in the conference is "bad" no matter the excuse. Pretty simple.
Go Phoenix!

I detest preseason rankings - the way I see it, everybody is starting with a 0-0 record, and our guys have the same opportunity as everybody else. Lot of sports success is belief and attitude - not discrediting talent, but sometimes the bigger factor is more intangible. I wish we were not starting the season at GA Tech - still believe that the UNC game last year just demoralized our team beyond the ability to rebound to a good season. Up to the coaches to mentally prepare the guys. We have not done well against option in the past, but we've sure seen it enough to know what to expect on a certain level. Things have been pretty quiet in terms of what we can really expect this year. I hope our 9th or 8th preseason rank lulls people to look past us and maybe we will surprise everybody.

So, I don't mean any disrespect to the team or the coaching staff. But, here's how I see it: 1) Georgia Southern 2) Chattanooga 3) Appalachian State 4) Samford 5) The Citadel 6) Wofford 7) Furman 8) Western Carolina 9) Elon If WCU had started Mitchell in the first half last year, they would have beaten our butts. I don't think their new head coach will make that same mistake again this year.

I really, really hope we surprise some people. I am less worried about our D than our offense. We have to find a QB, a running game and some people to throw to. Huge question marks. Our OLine play was pathetic last year. We have to run the ball to have any chance this year. Our three scholarship QB's have zero starts in their career and only one has seen time. I'm scared to death about this.
I agree with everyone's concern about the GT opener. They might go for 70 on us. It helps us later in the year in terms of prep, but I have concerns about injuries in that game. The only ACC teams we need to play are Wake and Duke. Enough of the football schools.
After doing a review of our roster, I think we have some talent - but boy are we young as a team.

our programs goal is to field a team that can compete in our league for a championship, I suppose that means We should be in every game and make more plays and be more mentally and physically tougher than our worthy opponents. a young and inexperienced team does have opportunities to fill holes and develop. a pivital season no doubt.

What has happened to this "program" in the past couple of years. Predictions of 8th or 9th place in the SoCon??? A lot of time being spent on listing possible recruits but nothing being said about how they will be developed or by whom I guess if the coach and staff are a bunch of nice guys, that's all that counts. Looks like a loser mentality has been developed on this board. This team could possibly go thru the season with no wins or maybe 1 or2. But that's OK cause the coach is a nice guy. Bye the way, I don't blame the coach. After all, he didn't hire himself. He applied and got the job, qualified or not and got it. If any of you think being in the CAA will help, IMHO your mistaken. Elon FB budget is strained already, adding the expenses of CAA travel will create more strain on the budget requiring juggling of funds from other areas to support travel. I suggest everyone relax on this recruiting stuff. You won't see much results until the end of the year. There won't be a rush of players accepting Elon offers until then. Quality players want quality programs with quality staffs. There are plenty of real good academic schools in the CAA, so Elon doesn't stand alone there. The problem is the direction the program has taken. I don't see things getting better in the near future. Have to wonder if the admin really cares about a winning program or if just having a team is enough.I'm an Elon fan but can't stand what has happened to this program in recent years.

A loser mentality isn't intended and certainly isn't desired. It would be very easy to say "we'll win 2 non conference games and at least 4 conference games", in an effort to see the glass as half full. But that's simply not realistic. The positive side says our defense is very experienced and has been responding well to the new defensive scheme. Also, The players have been responding well to the new strength & conditioning program and we are getting BJ Bennett, (a solid RB), and the other rbs have experience. But, realism says our O Line is small and inexperienced. None of our QBs have real game experience, and our recieving corps is depleted and motivation seems dubious. So, while there are positives, I still feel we are a year or two plus out from being competitive in the CAA.
I sincerely hope I have egg on my face at season's end. Then you can call me a loser all you want for having had this attitude!!!
