MEBANE — A common question was posed to Eastern Alamance quarterback John Lamot with every recruiting visit in recent years.
“A lot of recruiters have come by and they all ask him the same thing, ‘How do you feel about the defensive side of the ball?’ ” Eastern Alamance football coach John Kirby said.
That question received a similar answer each time.
“Yes sir I’m fine with that. I know it’s something new, but I look at it as I’m an athlete still,” Lamot said.
Lamot will bring that mentality and his versatile talents to Elon after making a verbal commitment Sunday night. It’s a decision that comes on the eve of his senior season.
“I wanted to do it before the season started so I could just be at ease and just have fun with my senior season,” said Lamot, who was last season’s pick as Times-News All-Region Offensive Player of the Year.
“I’m still going to work hard, it’s not like I’m going to rest and take it easy in the backseat.”
The senior cited being close to home and the perception that Elon is a program on the rise as reasons the Phoenix was the right choice for him. Elon was the first program to offer Lamot, and kept in close contact with him, he said.
Last season was Lamot’s first as the Eagles’ full-time quarterback after sharing duties in his sophomore season. He excelled, completing 63 percent of his passes for 2,089 yards and 16 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,599 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Lamot displayed a knack for the clutch, with game-winning fourth-quarter touchdowns against Northern Guilford and Western Alamance. But at 6-foot-2 and between 210 and 215 pounds, he could fill a variety of positions for the Phoenix.
“I couldn’t just be one position and closed-minded about it,” Lamot said. “I had to open up my skill set, which is why I love Elon because they trust in my skill set, and that’s why they offered in basketball season.”
Linebacker would be Lamot’s spot if he were assigned to defense, at least to start. If Lamot remains on the offensive side, he could line up at running back, receiver or tight end.
That brought about an interesting thought in the realm of alternate universes from Kirby.
“I really believe that if John were a linebacker at Eastern Alamance High School, this is not anything against Elon, but I really think the Dukes and the States and the Carolinas and people would be knocking down this door,” Kirby said. “But the thing with him is that he’s a quarterback at Eastern Alamance High School, he’s our athlete, he’s our go-to guy.”
