Elon to be without Dawson at start of season emailprintCOMMENT

ELON — The predominately young Elon football team has become a degree more inexperienced in the wake of Alexander Dawson’s two-game suspension. Coach Rich Skrosky said Monday that the senior linebacker will sit out Thursday night’s season opener at Wake Forest and the Sept. 12 game at Gardner-Webb due to a violation of team policy. “We have policies and people have to adhere by them,” Skrosky said. Dawson, the Eastern Alamance product, entered preseason training camp this month slated as a starter at an outside linebacker position. Corey Mitchell, a redshirt junior, now is the first-stringer at that spot. Dawson, who also has proven valuable on special teams during his career, hasn’t missed an Elon game since the 2012 season, appearing in 24 straight games combining the last two seasons. In 2013, he started all 12 games and finished third on the team with 70 tackles. He shifted into a defensive end / outside linebacker hybrid role last year. This season, he figures to return to mostly linebacker duties. “He’ll get right back into it,” Skrosky said, when asked about Dawson’s status when the suspension lifts. “Where he comes back (on the depth chart) remains to be seen, though. Some of it will be how these other guys play in their first two games.” Elon has several promising linebacker prospects in sophomores Johnathan Jackson and Bruno Anyangwe and true freshmen Warren Messer and Matt Baker to put around veteran middle linebacker John Silas. On the offensive line, Skrosky said Monday that true freshman C.J. Toogood will be Elon’s starter at left guard. He’s ahead of sophomore Graham Albright and senior Jacob Ingle at the position. Ingle, who’s out of Williams High School, has logged six starts there during the last two seasons. “It speaks maybe of where we’re going with the program,” Skrosky said. “We’ve infused some new talent. C.J.’s had a great camp.” Toogood, from Holly Springs, is among a group of at least three true freshmen, including left tackle Matt Kowalewski and center Alex Higgins, projected for playing time on Elon’s offensive line. » Comment or view comment

(taiking to myself) There is no mistake where youth will not be served as the season progresses. ? The upperclassmen have to embrace their and realize that they have to let the younger guys play, all things being equal.

Really surprising to see true freshmen OL getting playing time. Usually they are the most likely position to red shirt.

I just want to see if We have a team out there. Scores aside I really want this group to play like they can. Given the competition. Pride and enthusiasm better be present. It's game time.

GAME DAY!!!!
QB starter: Connor
Hoping for better, but I think 42-10 is the most realistic score in my mind.
Positives: We'll see better movement of the chains, defense will cause a couple TOs and see a brighter future in the program.

QB starter: CC with DT also playing
Score: 35-7 loss
Has anyone seen by how much Wake is favored?

I may be the optimist here, but I think our offense will be better than last year at this time. So I'm predicting a 38-21 loss.
Nothing is out on betting lines for this game.
