So, the season is over.
There have been deep heartaches, a few headaches, some thrills and, certainly, some things to be proud of.
4-7 is a record is something I think all of us would have been happy with three months ago. What's great is that it is disappointing. Everyone knows it could easily have been one or two more wins.
The defense was the heartbeat of the team and deserves so much credit for this turnaround.
The offense clearly has made strides this season. Is it where everyone wants it? No. But think of the future with this group.
All in all, well done, Phoenix. Enjoy your off season. You deserve it.

I believe this years squad did find some heart and experience to lay a foundation to compete at the CAA level We really should have a good to great recruiting class and those redshirts that matured this year could really fill some holes. Who knows how it all may work out my hope is that 2016 is also an improvement year. Make sure you all visit the recruiting tabs in Elon only and let's hope for some play-makers to arrive under the Oaks

Here are the season offensive stats compared to the opponents: Elon Opponents SCORING 147 273 Points Per Game 13.36 24.82 FIRST DOWNS 157 228 Rushing 44 109 Passing 95 108 Penalty 18 11 RUSHING YARDAGE 808 2183 Yards gained rushing 1081 2481 Yards lost rushing 273 298 Rushing Attempts 319 512 Average Per Rush 2.5 4.3 Average Per Game 73.5 198.5 TDs Rushing 7 22 PASSING YARDAGE 2021 2048 Att-Comp-Int 369-207-14 342-202-10 Average Per Pass 5.48 5.99 Average Per Catch 9.76 10.14 Average Per Game 183.73 186.18 TDs Passing 11 12 TOTAL OFFENSE 2829 4231 Total Plays 688 854 Average Per Play 4.1 5.0
I'm actually stunned. The passing stats are virtually even with the opponents. I never would have guessed that. I thought those bubble screens would have been stat killers. The rushing stats are way, way off. That, I suppose I knew.
The off season needs to focus on establishing a run game. With the extremely young offense we have, I think the passing game will increase fairly substantially next year. If they can get a running game going with Sommers and the new recruit, maybe there is something significant to look forward to.

Hey Homer -
Improvement over last year and agree, could easily have been 6-5 instead of 4-7.
A couple of stats you missed that are very revealing:
First missed Stat - Sacks by: Elon 23, Opponents 28
Last season we were sacked a little over 30 times (less mobile QB) and year before that (last year of swepson) we were sacked only 6 times (with same less mobile QB).
What I have seen this year (and last year) is a very rushed offense and little time for QB's to make decisions and WR's to run routes and get separation. O-line very porous. Rushing wise, very few holes and very little downfield blocking. Yesterday, CC seemed to have problems reading his pocket and often stepped into oncoming lineman. I wished he ran more yesterday = that would have helped with some of problems rushing the ball.
Take home message: - O-line needs improvement - two years in, different players but no real improvement from year before. All things good spring from a well-coached, 2 deep, offensive line. Still not there.
Second Missed Stat: Turnovers (fumbles lost and ints) - Elon 28 (14 fumbles, 14 int), Opp 17 (7 fumbles, 10 int). These stats have many causes - bad decision making, lack of focus, not enough time to throw. Fix them and things get better.
Other improvements I would make besides fixing the O-line would be to make things a little easier on QB and WR by running set routes - stop the guessing - as there is little time for that (see O-line problems). I would also install some designed QB run plays - a lot of problems yesterday was Delaware keying on RB and ignoring our QB. Don't remember him keeping the ball on these option plays and running it. QB needs to run at least 5 times a game to keep the defenses honest.

Another off-season job will be rebuilding the defensive line. That is the position that will be hurt the most by graduation.

My thoughts on th season. I was either at or watching every game.
* Offense:
Our scheme needs some work. Our running game was non-existent as a whole. Made it easy to defend. We never ran the ball wide or used any sort of reverse game.
We need to settle on a QB. I feel strongly that DT is not a QB at our level. CC is the better option. We need to sign at least one QB or look to the JuCo ranks. Having only two scholarship QB's is an absolute sin.
I also believe that you need to run the spread with a fast tempo. We do not run it that way. It is no longer a novelty and teams know how to defend it.
Overall grade: D - 13 pts a game should show us enough.
Defense:
Frankly, our D kept this season from being a real disaster. Our front will need to be replaced. Hopefully, some young kids step up next year. The secondary made strides as well.
Overall grade: B
Special Teams: Gallagher is a decent kicker and Petroni did a nice job.
Overall grade: B
Coaching:
We made strides. However, we did not show up to play in a number of games. That's on the coaches. I also felt like our play calling on offense was awful. Very predicable and no imagination.
We did improve the win total and things seem to be moving in the right direction.
Overall grade: C-
The culture is changing and with another strong recruiting class six wins next year should be our goal.

We were 1 win behind where I thought we would be this season as I thought we would be sitting at 5-6.
The D worked the butts off on Saturday, and really played with some heart. The way that last drive started, I was thinking to myself, "wow, they're going to pull this off!" But the penalty killed all momentum.
Elon WILL have a winning season next year.
