The program has been underachieving for several years now. This weekend will answer a few questions.
Fans have a right to be upset. We want a winner, or at least a competitive team. Fans did not set the expectation for the team or program, Coach Matheny did. Multiple NCAA appearances, etc.. These were the expectations Coach Matheny stated for the program. Those goals have yet to be reached.
I agree that we could have better players. Again, this is Coach Matheny's issue. The last COMPLETE class was Eddy, Hairston and Dawkins. The classes after them have had good players, but maybe 1 or 2 in each class. Coach Matheny has a bench with several "Project or Developmental Players". These players were given scholarships by Coach Matheny.
If Coach Matheny is the guru as some apologists have suggested, it should be evident this weekend. I have not been impressed with his in-game adjustments. In the past few games, 4 things have hurt us:
1. No ability to stop an opponent's best player. Other teams guards have been torching us.
2. No good in-game adjustments. Specifically, subbing poorly when the game is in a crucial segment.
3. Stopping the ridiculous 3 point bombing when we are not hitting. Why not stress driving to the basket?
4. Playing better team defense. The guards (Meech, Swoope and Santa Ana) need to give a much better effort. Dawkins and
Seibring can't do it all.
There are no new surprises with whom we play from here on. The other teams will be ready for us. Will Coach Matheny have us ready for them? Only time will tell. If properly coached, we should be very competitive.
