So are we now a D2 school. I guess we should not be playing Arkansas, Duke, UNC, Florida or West Virginia again. We have gone from a cellar dweller to what ever is lower than that. Oh, I guess we do have 2 D2 coaches on our staff. We are really looking like we should go back to D2 or even D3 in all sports as long as we have a D3 Athletic Director. I still don’t know why nothing has been announced. Also I do know that we have hired a new Running Backs coach and that also has not been announced. Our sports information department is virtually non existent. No more donations until Blank is gone!

Nothing against Sean, but for our first non-coach hiring news after losing our entire coaching staff, top six players to portal or graduation, and both high school commits, to be the commitment of a D2 grad transfer (from our coach’s old school) is pretty bleak. Guess that is fitting.
While Schrage never proved over three years to be a good coach at very least he engaged fans with activity on Twitter, recruiting offers, and pursuing portal transfers from larger schools.
Outside of his press conference, Taylor’s tenure so far has been the worst case scenario. It inspires no hope. I don’t know if something is going on in the Athletics Dept but they need to get their act together. And quick.

In this day and age, a head coach in either basketball or football (but especially B-Ball) should know two things above all other: 1) How to effectively utilize social media 2) Know how to manipulate the transfer portal
That's it. That's college sports in 2022. Usually, these requirements are met by younger coaches...40 or under. That sounds harsh, but its reality. This is especially important at a mid-major, who cannot rely on legacy.
Hiring a re-tread off the scrap heap (Billy Taylor) represents pre-2020 thinking. Its a different world. Elon should go ahead and start their coaching search to replace Taylor in 2-3 years.

Reached out to one of my old colleagues who I used to work construction with, as he now works as Director of Campus Facilities at Belmont Abbey, and follows their basketball program closely.
He said our new addition is, “A nice kid who should be able to contribute and set the foundation for the Elon program under a new Head Coach.”
Says he’s a solid shooter with a great feel for the game; may struggle on the defensive end and athletically handling the transition to D1.
Billy seems to have jumped off to a good start in the portal.

When I saw the Schar Center being built, I had dreams for our school competing solidly with Murray State, Belmont, Iona, St. Mary’s and Davidson level teams within the first 3-4 years, picking off a major or two along the way. At our current pace, it appears we won’t compete solidly with Chico State, Queens, UNC Pembroke or Lubbock Christian level teams any time soon. Right now I’m just stunned by pretty much everything I’ve seen of Elon men’s basketball since the beginning of the 2021-2022 season. Recruiting was the lone bright spot. Now that has gone with the transfer portal and decommits. Just very sad at this point.

Honestly, If Belmont Abbey needs an experienced, solid replacement for Halloran, they might consider picking up Ben Daugherty from the transfer portal.

Elon should go ahead and start their coaching search to replace Taylor in 2-3 years. I liked Taylor's intro press conference but your point here is what concerned me. He talked about a slow build, the right way, foundation, etc. I don't think that's the way it's done anymore and I think players are less and less interested in that by the minute. You can lose everything to the portal but you can also build a winner immediately. I'm not interested in built in excuses for why you are no good for several years. And while I'm at it, I have a problem with Elon for Schrage's exit. I assumed he was told to look for a new job and resign. If that's the case, framing it as a resignation may be good for Schrage, but it's not good for Elon's look. Show everybody you have standards. If he actually decided to leave on his own, why on earth was he not shown the door after last year? It became painfully obvious to me that he cannot coach. Can recruit but can't develop, strategize, or get his players to play with any intensity. Elon doesn't take athletics seriously and that bothers me. Or maybe it just doesn't get it. What a missed opportunity to build engagement, or to just have some pride in yourself and what you are putting out there.

Seems like a nice kid, but it is a little concerning his only other offers were from D2 schools… Am i the only one concerned Taylor (who was mediocre at each D1 spot he coached and only above .500 for one year at the D2 level) has only brought in D2 guys (2 assistants, a D2 grad transfer from his old school, and prep prospect with only D2 offers)? I know we aren’t in much of a position to think we’re better than other D1 teams, but I would certainly hope we are better than D2 talent.

He has a nice shooting stroke, but this is a recruiting highlight video. The most concerning thing is he's slow. If what's shown on the video is his best, he will need to speed up, A LOT, to get shots off in the CAA.

Let's not go crazy. But an up and coming, hungry HC is what Elon should be scouting for. And not to change gears, but we need to find a better conference. Northeastern, Charleston and Delaware (Delaware!! ) are openly looking at better landing spots. If those 3 leave, the CAA B-Ball rep takes a big hit.

True, but where are we going to go? Frankly, with our history and with it known how poorly we pay our coaches, we won't sniff a better conference. if we change we're looking at the SoCon, at best, but more likely the MAAC, or the Patriot. Honestly, we don't need to be looking at a new conference or anything outside of our own program right now. We need to upgrade Elon Athletics to something the alumni and boosters can, at least mildly, be proud of. Right now the department and the MBB program look... I don't know, the nice way to say it is substandard.
