As I write this there is only 11 days until opening tip. I had the pleasure of speaking in great length to one of the coaches who said the leading scorer this year would be Zac Ervin followed closely by Torrence Watson. He said this past paced offence really allows Zac to gain space and shoot the 3 at a high percentage. Look for Zac to be among the leaders this year in the CAA for 3 pointers made.
It appears Jadun Michael is finally healthy and is playing very well. Said to be extremely athletic so we may finally get to see what he can bring to this Phoenix team.
Newcomer and Grad Transfer, Sean Halloran will be an immediate contributor and though lacking D1 experience he seems to be adapting well to this level of play.
Some bad news in that Butler was injured a while back in practice. Said to be a knee injury and will be out of action until January. Too bad because he was said to be ready to play and be a big time contributor before he was injured. Will be nice to get him near the start of Conference play.
The newcomers are looking well and adapting to the quicker pace of college ball. Max Mackinnon played professionally in Australia will be a nice addition and Deandre Smart as well as LA Pratt could be potential star players on this team. Throw in John Bowen from UNC-WIlmington among return players like Sam Sherry, Andrew Junkin and even RJ Noord I think we are going to be better than people give us credit for.
My prediction for this season. I think we win one of the two games in Asheville's Tournament. I believe our non-conference schedule will be 6-7 and conference schedule at 7-11 for a 13-18 record heading into the CAA Tournament. That may sound a bit disappointing but we only won 10 games last year and considering the talent that we lost in Burford, Graham, Mackintosh and Woods I would say it is a decent start for the Billy Taylor era. I feel these coaches are committed to letting these players play to their strengths. They are going to run and play at a high pace. Look for high scoring games which makes the players happy. When the players are happy they play better and that translates into future success. I think it was a weak recruiting year but we got off to an incredibly late start. Let us see how this season turns out as we build into the future.
Just my two cents.....Love to hear what others predictions for the season are!!!
