Leading scorer leaves WCU men's basketball team by Tyler Norris Goode published November 28, 2007 3:07 pm Read all 6 comments » e-mail this Print this
CULLOWHEE - Nick Aldridge, the Catamounts' leading scorer, has quit the Western Carolina men's basketball team.
A sophomore from South Webster, Ohio, Aldridge was averaging 18.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for WCU (2-4).
Advertisement He did not play in WCU's 10-point loss to Elon on Tuesday due to a violation of unspecified team rules.
WCU coach Larry Hunter issued the following statement about Aldridge:
“Nick Aldridge has made a decision to no longer be a part of our basketball program. Nick had some issues that we felt were being detrimental to the development of our team and we have for some time been trying to help him work through these issues. He has chosen not to work with us any longer. The bottom line is he has quit our team. We are moving forward as a team and a program.”
WCU spokesman Daniel Hooker would not discuss the nature of Aldridge team-rules violation except to say Aldridge did not break the law.

I really feel for WCU. It was really tough for us when we lost Montell at the begining of last season. Looks like Aldridge won't be back though.

WCU fans have been saying we are the worst team in the SoCon, even after our win the other night.
It's pretty typical talk though.....when Elon wins in any sport, it's because the SoCon is having a "down year."

With the current state of their football and basketball programs they are the experts on "awful". With that wisdom they've apparently taken it upon themselves to bestow that label on other teams that are deserving. The whole "misery loves company" saying is appropriate here. While Elon isn't the best team in the conference, I see absolutely no reason why this team can't go .500 or better in the conference if they keep playing the way they are. I'm certainly excited about the remainder of the season.
I really do hope WCU rights the ship. In general, their fans have been some of the best in the conference to us.
Go Phoenix!

At the beginning of the year, I would have been likely to agree with them, but we swept the regular season from them last year and we were bad. Honestly, the way they are losing players off of that team, Western's is surprising in trouble. I thought they were on the up and up, but I guess not. I think Hunter is beginning to lose this team. Losing a leading scorer for internal issues can resonate negatively.

I have not seen their posts, but I'm guessing they are distressed over losing to the team who was expected to finish last in the conference. Generally I find the WCU people pretty respectful of us...so maybe they are just frustrated with their own program (as opposed to dissing ours). It's a huge blow to a program to lose a starting player, but they will adjust and probably have a better season than it may now appear. We did play a terrible first half...and anybody who saw only that part of the game, and that they lost to us, would be very discouraged.
