Men's tennis lost 6-1 to Duke yesterday. Good news is Gooch beat the #95 ranked singles player. Hopefully he can find his way into the rankings.

Gooch Named Southern Conference Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon University men's tennis sophomore Damon Gooch (Gauteng, South Africa/Edenvale) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week.

A First Team All-Southern Conference singles and doubles player and Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2006, Gooch is off to an 8-1 start at No. 1 singles and an 8-1 mark at No. 1 doubles with partner Mason Schermerhorn this spring.

Gooch's singles victories include straight-set wins over then-No. 39 Roy Sichel of Charlotte, then-No. 95 Joey Atas of Duke, Dimitry Lomakin of three-time defending MEAC champion South Carolina State, Pedro Rodrigues of then-No. 37 South Carolina and Andrew Stubbs of SoCon foe Wofford.

Gooch has led the No. 51 Phoenix, Southern Conference regular season co-champion in 2006, to a 9-2 beginning this spring. Elon's victories include triumphs over perennial SEC power South Carolina and perennial MEAC power South Carolina State. The Phoenix's lone losses have been to national powers Wake Forest and Duke.
