BOONE, N.C. – Elon captured all three doubles matches and then claimed four of the six singles bouts on its way to posting its third consecutive Southern Conference women's tennis victory – a 5-2 road win over Appalachian State on Thursday evening.
Deanna Bailey (over Anja Gugger 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1), captain Jenn Tucci (over Monica Tomas 6-7 (0-6), 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2), Paige Kensrue (over Lauren Holton 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 at No. 4) and Hayley Wahl (over Caroline Mauch 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 at No. 5) all enjoyed success for the Phoenix (12-9 overall, 6-3 SoCon).
Amanda Cash (over Kelley Moore 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3) and Mallory Cook (over Whitney Butcher 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 at No. 6) pulled out singles victories for the Mountaineers (9-14, 2-7).
The regular season league finale for both squads, the outcome enabled Elon to tighten its stranglehold on fourth place in the 10-team standings entering next week's Southern Conference Championships. The setback left Appalachian State in eighth place.
The Phoenix's 12 triumphs build upon the program's highest victory total since officially entering the NCAA Division I ranks for the 2000 campaign. Elon's six SoCon regular-season wins also mark a program record.
In doubles competition, Bailey and Tucci foiled Gugger and Cash 8-4 at No. 1, Moore and Wahl upended Holton and Tomas 8-3 at No. 2 and Kensrue and Butcher ousted Cook and Mauch 8-3 at No. 3.
The Phoenix will conclude its regular season Saturday, hosting Lees-McRae at 11 a.m. and Liberty at 4:30 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
