4/19/2007
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Elon’s Deanna Bailey has been named the 2007 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. It was announced at the league’s annual awards ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship.
Bailey was also tabbed to the First Team All-Southern Conference, becoming the first Phoenix women’s tennis player to ever earn All-SoCon accolades. She also becomes the first Elon women’s tennis player to earn all-league recognition since Sarah Benhaim registered All-Big South Conference distinction in 2000 and 2001.
The McDonough, Ga. native and former Union Grove High School star led Elon (13-9 overall, 6-3 SoCon) to its best season this spring since the Phoenix officially joined the NCAA Division I ranks for the 1999-2000 academic year and the Southern Conference for the 2003-04 campaign.
Bailey has fashioned a 15-7 singles record so far this spring – all at No. 1, including a 6-3 mark versus Southern Conference foes. She has earned SoCon Player of the Week honors once. Bailey and team captain Jenn Tucci combined forces to forge an 11-7 doubles ledger this spring – all at No. 1.
Tournament play begins with first-round contests at 10 a.m. Thursday, but the fourth-seeded Phoenix, coming off four consecutive victories, will receive a first-round bye and face fifth-seeded UNC Greensboro in a 10 a.m. meeting Friday in quarterfinal action.
On Thursday at the City of Charleston Farmfield Courts, eighth-seeded Appalachian State eliminated ninth-seeded Chattanooga 4-3 while seventh-seeded Wofford knocked off 10th-seeded Western Carolina 4-2 to open the tournament. The rest of the action now shifts to the Earle Tennis Center on The Citadel campus.
On Friday, top-seeded Furman, winner of eight of the past nine tournament titles, welcomes the Mountaineers at 8:30 a.m. Following the Elon/UNCG match at 10 a.m., second-seeded College of Charleston plays the Terriers at 12:30 p.m. and third-seeded Davidson takes on sixth-seeded Georgia Southern at 2 p.m.
Semifinal matches take place at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Saturday and the championship match will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday.
