Three huge matches Adam Smith / Times-News April 20, 2007 3:00 AM
ELON — The accomplishments, some of them unprecedented, reveal that the Elon University men’s tennis team is in the process of penning history.
Yet even with the school’s highest national ranking in tow and a single-season record for victories in sight, Elon’s 2007 journey is a piece largely unwritten.
The Phoenix arrives at this weekend’s Southern Conference Tournament as the top seed for the second consecutive year, needing three wins during three days to stamp a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Which would create a chapter of storybook proportions.
“We’re happy that we’ve done so well,” No. 2 singles player Anuwat Dalodom said. “But if we lose a match in the conference tournament, it doesn’t mean anything.”
Actually, that part remains to be seen. Coach Michael Leonard said Elon’s No. 44 ranking among the Intercollegiate Tennis Association places the Phoenix squarely on the bubble for an at-large berth in the NCAAs.
Although two other Southern Conference teams carry national rankings — No. 57 College of Charleston and No. 58 Furman — losing this weekend at any point in the league tournament obviously would harm Elon’s status and point the team toward more dicey territory.
“So we can’t expect to have much wiggle room if we don’t go take care of business,” Leonard said.
“We don’t want to leave anything to chance,” No. 4 singles player Sebastian Bredberg said. “We want to get in by winning the conference tournament. That would be really great.”
Elon (20-2 overall, 9-0 Southern Conference) hasn’t tumbled against a league opponent since the semifinals of last year’s tournament. Duke and Wake Forest, both ranked in the Top 15 nationally, are the teams that have beaten Elon this season.
The Phoenix’s 11-match winning streak represents the program’s longest since 1993. Elon sits three victories shy of eclipsing the school record established in 1990.
It has been a stirring rise engineered by Leonard, the reigning Southern Conference Coach of the Year from last season. Elon staggered to a 5-17 season in 2005, including a mark of 0-10 in the league, during Leonard’s first year.
Since then, the Phoenix has fired off 39 wins in its last 46 matches.
“Never really thought we’d find ourselves in this position,” said No. 6 singles player Austin Fenn, one of two seniors in Elon’s regular lineup. “But it’s great to be here, just to see everything pay off.
“This has been our goal since Coach Leonard got here. And I think we’re ready to accomplish that goal now. We’ve got a little bit of a chip on our shoulder.”
That’s because Elon has gone a collective 1-3 in its brief Southern Conference Tournament appearances.
Last season’s run of 19 victories in a 21-match span screeched to a halt when fourth-seeded Chattanooga derailed the Phoenix a round shy of the tournament final.
“I’m hoping that they remember that,” Leonard said. “I think in some ways that could help us, hopefully, knowing that there’s a lot left to do to kind of finish the way we’d like to. “In that sense, we’ve got a lot to play for still.”
Fenn readily recalls the painful cramps that hindered him in last season’s tournament loss. Dalodom said Elon entered the event with somewhat of a lowered energy level after a draining regular season.
And that’s where this season’s improved depth factors in.
The addition of Mason Schermerhorn, a North Carolina State transfer, at No. 3 singles has supplied more support of Damon Gooch and Dalodom at the two higher positions and solidified Elon’s lineup throughout.
“This year I don’t know if we’re in better shape,” Bredberg said, “but we’re coming into the conference tournament stronger, I think.”

EU99, I am with you. 5-1 right now, so I think there are only 2 matches left.

I see 4-1, which is still enough. I believe 7 points are awarded each time.
Congrats to the guys!

I believe this breaks the Elon win record too. Anyone know how NCAA tourney works for tennis? Is there a team and an individual tourney going on at the same time? Is it 64 teams? Let's hope they can make some noise.
Go Phoenix!
