Elon Finishes No. 44 in National Rankings
5/31/2007
ELON, N.C. – Fresh off of its most successful campaign since officially joining the NCAA Division I ranks during the 1999-2000 academic year, Elon has ended up at No. 44 in the final 2007 Fila Collegiate Men’s Tennis Rankings. The Phoenix peaked at No. 42 – the program’s highest NCAA-I ranking ever – earlier this season.
First Team All-SoCon selection Damon Gooch (17-4 at No. 1 this spring), First Team All-SoCon pick and SoCon Tournament MVP Anuwat Dalodom (18-4 at No. 2), Mason Schermerhorn (18-4 at No. 3), team co-captain Sebastian Bredberg (16-5 at No. 4), Second Team All-SoCon honoree Gustaf Asplund (18-3 at No. 5) and team co-captain and Second Team All-SoCon player Austin Fenn (18-5 at No. 6) led Elon to not only a lofty spot in the prestigious rankings, but to a second consecutive Southern Conference regular season crown and the 2007 SoCon tournament title as well.
The Phoenix gave Elon its first Southern Conference tournament crown and first automatic NCAA tournament bid in any sport since officially joining SoCon competition four years ago. Then-No. 22 Clemson eliminated the Phoenix from postseason play in the first round of the NCAA Championship earlier this month.
Finishing with a 23-3 record, Elon surpassed its 1990 NAIA Division I national championship team (22-3) as the winningest squad in Phoenix men’s tennis history. Elon mentor Michael Leonard, the Southern Conference Coach of the Year the past two seasons, was a junior playing at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles on the 1990 team. Of the 23 wins, 13 were decided in shutout fashion.
The Phoenix forged a perfect 12-0 mark against Southern Conference opponents with sole setbacks coming to nationally-ranked foes Clemson, Duke and Wake Forest. Elon’s 14-match winning streak entering NCAA tournament action marked the program’s longest streak since the 1993 squad won 17 matches in a row. The Phoenix finished 3-3 against nationally-ranked teams and 20-0 against unranked programs, accumulating an astounding 116-27 singles record (.811) and a sizzling 50-16 doubles slate (.758) this spring.
