Elliston Announces Track and Field Recruiting Class

ELON, N.C. – Elon University head coach Mark Elliston today announced the addition of 10 newcomers to the Phoenix women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams for the 2007-08 campaign.
“This was a great recruiting season,” Elliston said. “I am very pleased with the amount of talented athletes that we were able to attract to Elon for next season.”
Jacqueline Beliveau (North Granby, Conn./Northwest Catholic) signed a national letter-of-intent this spring. Her top events include the 400-meter dash (59.83 seconds), the long jump (17-0.25), the high jump (5-2) and the heptathlon (3,776 points). She was a conference champion in both the 400-meter dash and the high jump for Northwest Catholic High School. She was also a member of the conference champion 4x400-meter relay team.
“Jacqueline is a solid athlete, able to compete in many events from sprints to jumps,” Elliston said. “She will be a conference competitor in the multi-events.”
Veronica Day (Vienna, Va./Madison) signed a national letter-of-intent this spring. Her top events include the long Jump (18-09), the triple jump (37-06.5) and the 200-meter dash (26.85 seconds). The all-state long jumper appeared in the Virginia AAA State Meet all four years. Day served Madison High School as a captain the past two years and was a Nike Indoor and Outdoor National Championship competitor in the triple jump.
“Veronica is a great long and triple jumper and will really add needed depth to our jumping squad,” Elliston said. “She is also a very talented sprinter that will be vying for a relay spot as well.”
Lauren Hawkesworth (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo), an AAU Junior Olympic qualifier, excelled in the long jump (16-10), the triple jump (35-5) and the 100-meter dash (12.87 seconds) for Oviedo High School.
“Lauren is a strong competitor,” Elliston said. “She will only get better as the season progresses.”
Andrea March (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township), who has transferred to Elon from Duke University, specializes in the 55-meter hurdles (8.50 seconds), the 100-meter hurdles (14.40 seconds), the 400-meter hurdles (62.59 seconds) and the high jump (5-2).
“We are excited about Andrea's decision to transfer to Elon,” Elliston said. “She brings a wealth of talent and experience to the hurdles and sprints. She will make a very competitive heptathlete as well.”
Krystal Paskeicz (Sultan, Wash./Sultan), who signed a national letter-of-intent this spring, was a star for Sultan High School in both the discus (128-0) and the shot put (42-2). She was a two-time Washington state discus champion and a state shot put runner-up. A four-time conference champion and a four-time district champion, Paskeicz claimed a pair of league and district titles in both the discus and the shot put. The three-time team MVP garners her conference’s shot put record as well as the top discus mark for both her school and her district.
“Krystal is one of two incoming throwers who will make an immediate impact in the Southern Conference,” Elliston said. “Matt Roden, our throws coach, has done an outstanding job bringing in two highly touted and talented throwers that will surely help us build a successful program.”
Justine Robertson (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), a conference javelin champion, signed a national letter-of-intent this spring. In addition to the javelin (118-11), Robertson was also a standout in the discus (135-11) and the shot put (40-4) for Central Bucks West High School.
“Justine is a very agile and multi-talented thrower,” Elliston said. “She will be looking to score in several events on the conference level.”
Taylor Shaw (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) was a high school star in the 200-meter dash (27.28 seconds), the 400-meter dash (60.50 seconds) and the 800-meter run (2:22).
“Taylor is a solid competitor,” Elliston said. “I am confident that she will become nothing but better as the year goes by.”
Sarah Skogen (Woodstock, Ga./Woodstock) signed a national letter-of-intent with the Phoenix last fall. A Georgia State Meet participant, she excelled in the 100-meter dash (12.60 seconds), the 200-meter dash (25.85 seconds) and the 400-meter dash (57.76 seconds) while representing Woodstock High School. She is a county 200-meter dash champion and a three-time county 400-meter dash champion.
“Sarah will be an amazing addition to our sprint/relay crews,” Elliston said. “She's extremely talented and as our first signee, she gave our recruiting season the kick start we needed.”
Melissa Turowski (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore), who signed a national letter-of-intent this spring, competed in the 200 meters (26.10 seconds), the 300 meters (42.30 seconds), the 400 meters (57.01 seconds) and the 500 meters (1:17.90) for Linganore High School. She was a First Team All-MVAL athlete and the Frederick County Runner of the Year. Also a standout in the classroom, Turowski is a recipient of the Elon Presidential Scholar Award.
“Melissa is a very strong competitor with great speed,” Elliston said. “I have no doubt that she will help us in the relays and individual sprints.”
Courtney Weathers (Marietta, Ga./Harrison), a prep star in both the high jump (5-4) and the 400-meter dash (58.87 seconds), signed a national letter-of-intent this spring. She finished in seventh place in the high jump at the Georgia State Meet after earning a runner-up finish in region competition. Weathers is also an Elon Presidential Scholar Award recipient.
“Courtney will add much-needed depth in the high jump event,” Elliston said. “With a personal best of 5-4, she is sure to do well on the college level, including in the Southern Conference Championships.”
