Here is a summary of the preseason from Elon.
Men's Soccer Wraps Up Preseason Training 8/27/2007
ELON, N.C. - The Elon men's soccer team wrapped up its 2007 preseason training session Sunday with a 1-1 draw in an exhibition match versus Coastal Carolina at Rudd Field.
The Chanticleers got on the board first, taking the lead in the 72nd minute but Elon was quick to respond as sophomore forward Justin Wyatt found the back of the net for the Phoenix on a cross from junior Andrew Johnson to even the score.
After a tough preseason, Phoenix head coach Darren Powell is very optimistic about the upcoming season.
"Our team improved today against a good team," said Darren Powell. "We have to have a good week of practice in preparation for our first game against William & Mary. We know the team is really looking forward to our first competitive match."
Coastal Carolina had previously beaten nationally-ranked Duke (No. 2) 2-1 in an exhibition match earlier in the week.
The Phoenix dropped an earlier preseason decision 2-1 at Campbell on Thursday, Aug. 23. Elon scored first when Steven Kinney's header off of an Erfan Imeni corner beat Camel keeper Aaron Johnson at the far post in the 18th minute, but the Phoenix conceded goals in the 29th and 34th minutes to give the Camels a 2-1 advantage.
Elon nearly scored again when sophomore midfielder Daniel Street broke free but his attempt was blocked by the Camel's back-up keeper.
"We addressed a few issues after our performance against Campbell for the Coastal game," added Powell, "and the boys responded well and showed improvement. This is a good sign if we can continue to improve the team will do well."
The Phoenix will open up the 2007 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 1 at William & Mary. The start time is set for 7 p.m.
