CLEMSON, S.C. -- The Elon Phoenix jumped out on top of the Clemson Tigers early in the first half in men's soccer action on Tuesday night, but saw the Tigers even the score right away in the second stanza as the two squads battled to a 1-1 draw. Clemson's second half score was the first goal allowed by Elon in 427:04 of play. The Phoenix had blanked each of its last four opponents.
The Phoenix (4-2-2), who is now riding a five match unbeaten streak, scored the first marker of the game. Justin Wyatt found the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season just 13:36 into the contest. The score was set up by Aaron Parker and Brett Paschall.
Elon was able to hold onto its 1-0 advantage thanks to Kyle Boerner's seven first half saves.
Clemson (3-4-1) evened the score at one just 1:11 into the second half of play. Tate Parrish and Tommy Drake played the ball to David Newton off a corner who beat Boerner for the tally, ending Elon's streak of keeping opponents scoreless.
Neither team was able to score during the rest of regulation and the squads headed to overtime knotted at 1-1.
Both teams went without a shot on goal throughout the two overtime periods.
Boerner finished the night with 11 saves while Joseph Bendik corralled three saves for Clemson.
"We are extremely proud of the way our boys fought right to the last whistle against a very tough Clemson team," said Elon head coach Darren Powell. "We hope to build on this experience for Sunday's SoCon match with Davidson."
The Phoenix returns to Rudd Field on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. against league rival Davidson. That match is the back end of a doubleheader with the Elon women's squad who will host SoCon foe Furman at 2:00 p.m.
