Looks like Elon landed some good freshmen...
Phoenix Freshmen Land in Qualifying Finals 10/18/2007
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Elon accomplished a feat Wednesday that seemed improbable if not impossible, sending all four of its freshmen – Alberto Rojas, Chase Helpingstine, Philip Nemec and Cody Stauffer MacDowell – to the finals of men’s open qualifying action in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/Wilson Mideast Regional Championships.
Rojas defeated Presbyterian’s Michael Nicol 6-3, 6-3 before falling to top-seeded Christopher Cloer of Florida State 6-7 (6-8), 6-0, 6-4.
Helpingstine outlasted USC Upstate’s Jack Roux 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and upset fifth-seeded Ryan Smith of Georgia Tech 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 before losing to Davidson’s Walker Lyons 6-3, 6-0.
Nemec won over Norfolk State’s Petr Krakora by default and knocked off fourth-seeded Aaron Carpenter of Duke 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) before falling to North Carolina’s Sandeep Daiya 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2.
Stauffer MacDowell ousted Richmond’s Douglas Banker 6-0, 6-3 and won against Old Dominion’s Tobias Fanselow by default before losing to North Carolina’s Tristan Heinrich 6-4, 6-3.
Elon’s Damon Gooch and Mason Schermerhorn both compete in the main draw of singles play Thursday. All three Phoenix doubles teams – the 10th-seeded duo of Gooch and Schermerhorn, the combo of Rojas and Nemec and the team of Helpingstine and Stauffer MacDowell – will also spring into action Thursday.

Bailey, Tucci Claim Success in ITA Regional 10/19/2007
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Going where no Elon women’s tennis player has gone before, junior Jenn Tucci and sophomore Deanna Bailey out-dueled USC Upstate’s Emilia Milovanovic and Anna Novo 9-8 (5) in women’s main draw doubles action Thursday afternoon at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships.
Not only did the Phoenix come away with the program’s first doubles victory in ITA Division I Regional history, but Elon earned its first-ever singles victory in the tournament when Tucci overcame Memphis’ Dara Toulch 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in qualifying action. In her second match, Tucci fell to Charlotte’s Yudeshnee Pillay 6-3, 6-1.
Both singles and doubles play will continue Friday. Bailey and teammate Paige Kensrue will both represent the Phoenix in the main draw of the singles.
