Spartanburg, S.C. -- The Southern Conference fall championships season kicks off this weekend with the 2007 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships in Cullowhee, N.C., on Saturday, October 27.
The Appalachian State men’s team swept first place in the 2006 championships winning both the team and individual titles. This season the Mountaineers are led by the 2006 individual champion, sophomore Phil Mitchell, with a time of 25.17 and the 2006 Freshmen of the Year the Josh Houser.
ASU currently boosts six of the top ten ranked runners in the conference standings, including three runners in the top five. Chattanooga senior Michael Mentz currently has the top time in the Southern Conference at 24:39.92. Appalachian State, Chattanooga, and Furman have control of the top ten rankings. Appalachian State junior Asmeron Desta (24.49), sophomore Phil Mitchell (24:50) and senior Brian Deal (24.53) hold the second, third and fourth place rankings. Rounding out the top five is Chattanooga’s Chris Berry with a time of 24:59. Furman also has one of the top ten spots.
Among current SoCon schools, the Appalachian State men lead the conference with nine titles, including one shared title with East Tennessee State in 1989. They are followed by Chattanooga with four titles and Furman with three.
The Chattanooga women look to repeat as team champions but could be challenged by a deep field on the women’s side. Coach Bill Gautier, 2006 Coach-of-the-Year, will have a hard time replacing last year’s champion in Lanni Marchant. With two runners in the top five in the conference coming into the championship, Kathleen Turchin with 17:34 and Shelly Taylor with 17:58, the Lady Mocs should have a good opportunity to repeat.
Davidson hopes to give Chattanooga a run for the team title with three of its runners in the top five and four in the top 10. Caroline Sanker has the fastest time in the conference this year (17:05) and her Wildcat teammate Brenna Burns is right behind her with the second fastest time in the conference (17:20). In addition Davidson’s Ann O’Donnell has the fifth fastest time in the conference this season (18:02). Furman has two runners in the top 10, Jenna Callahan and Brittany Johnson, while Elon and College of Charleston both have one.
Appalachian State has won nine women's titles, including seven straight from 1986-92. The Mountaineers are followed by Furman and defending champion Chattanooga, who each own five titles. Davidson claimed the 2003 title.
Admission to the event is free to the public. The women’s race will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the men’s race at 10:45 a.m. Results and other information can be found at www.SoConSports.com.
