Body found off Independence not likely missing man's STEVE LYTTLE slyttle@charlotteobserver.com
The body was found near the intersection of Independence Boulevard and Sardis Road North. Police are investigating a body found this morning near one of Charlotte's busiest thoroughfares.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Officer Robert Fey said the body appears to be that of a Latino man.
Numerous Observer readers have sent e-mails this morning, concerned that the body might be that of Kyle Fleischmann, a 24-year-old Charlotte man missing for a week. Fey said he does not believe the victim found this morning on East Independence Boulevard was Fleischmann's.
The death appears to be a case of hit-and-run, and police are trying to determine who might have struck the victim.
Police say the body was discovered shortly after 7 a.m. near East Independence Boulevard and Sardis Road North, in the Crown Point area of southeast Charlotte.
Traffic is affected in the area, and motorists heading into Charlotte should consider an alternate route until late morning.
According to police, MEDIC declared the person dead at the scene. There is no official word on the gender of the victim or whether any violence might have been involved.
The body was discovered on the northeast side (along the inbound side) of Independence Boulevard, a short distance from the intersection of Sardis Road North. It was found in a ditch, near a wooded area that buffers the highway from a townhouse complex.
Police say Homicide detectives and the HITS squad have been called in. HITS, or Highway Interdiction Traffic Safety, investigates vehicle-related deaths.

AMW will be running a story on tonights show. tune into fox at 9. as for a quick update the family has stooped there private investigation and now hired a psychic which is working with police. Earlier a huge crowd along with 75 firefighters combed every inch of Downtown but turned up nothing. The updates are less and less on the evening news. I just hope they get a resolution b4 it turns into a cold case.

CATCHING UP WITH ... RICHARD FLEISCHMANN Searching for son, with few clues On Nov. 9, Kyle Fleischmann vanished after an evening with friends in uptown Charlotte. Hundreds of people spent weeks looking for the 24-year-old; the search got some national coverage. Kyle is still missing. Staff writer Jennifer Rothacker spoke with his father, Richard Fleischmann.
Q. Any new development ? Just a couple of leads through Crime Stoppers that (police) are investigating. Two of them more than scratch the surface and might have some answers.
Q. What are the leads? I really can't (say). The police don't want anything to get in their way.
Q. You've said before that you believe Kyle is deceased. Do you still? I do. No doubt in mind.
Q. Why? I can't believe he's alive. He would be in communication with us.
Q. Do you have any theories on what happened? One theory is he was walking down the street, well dressed, and it's possible a group of people wanted money or his ATM card. He didn't have either. Another theory: He got into the wrong cab.
Q. Do you think his case will be solved? The more time (that goes by), the harder it is. If somebody did see something, they now have had more time to cover the evidence.
Q. Are you still actively searching? We were just out in First Ward. It's an area where we all searched, but this person called in (to Crime Stoppers) and said to look in a different location. The private investigator was out there for seven hours recently and came up with nothing.
Q. Do you still have lots of volunteer searchers? It's dying down. We want to keep it to the professionals. During a search about a month and a half ago, the (volunteer) searchers got in the middle of a gang shooting.
Q. Is your life returning to near normal? I've been back at work now for about three weeks. It's not easy.
My wife has breast cancer and is under chemo until May. She's gotten very thin. Not because of the cancer, but because of the stress over Kyle.
Q. A foundation was set up to help cover search costs. How much was raised? We have filed for (nonprofit) status, which would allow everyone who contributed since Nov. 19 a charitable tax deduction. I don't want to give a dollar figure. But I'll spend whatever I have to.
Have information?
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. The Fleischmanns are offering a $25,000 reward.
Catching up with ...
Richard Fleischmann
