CLEMSON, S.C. – Elon senior Dominique Price successfully defended her 60-meter hurdles league title, leading the Phoenix to a program-best fifth-place finish in the 11-team field at the 2008 Southern Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Facility.
Price sprinted to a season-best time of 8.84 seconds to take home the Gold Medal. Elon finished in seventh place at its first SoCon Meet in 2004 and in sixth place each of the following three years. In addition to recording Elon’s highest finish ever in the SoCon Meet and tallying a conference champion, the Phoenix also came away from the Championships with four new program records and two all-conference performers.
“We finished sixth last year and this was a great all-around showing for a team that consists of mainly freshmen and sophomores,” second-year Elon coach Mark Elliston said. “These athletes have a very bright future and are a solid foundation for building this program. Everyone is really looking forward to the outdoor season which will start with our opening meet at Coastal Carolina on March 14th and 15th.”
In each event, the top-three finishers earned all-conference honors while the top-eight performers scored points for their team. Sophomore Jennine Strange improved upon her own Phoenix record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.54, placing third in the event to join Price on the all-conference team.
Freshman throwers Justine Robertson and Krystal Paszkeicz finished within a half-inch of each other in the shot put to place fifth and sixth respectively – behind four senior competitors – en route to establishing another Elon milestone.
Robertson ended up with a season-best toss of 12.15 meters (39-10.50), breaking her own school record while finishing just a half-inch ahead of Paszkeicz (12.14 meters/39-10.00). The weight throw saw another Phoenix standard fall as Paszkeicz threw the implement a personal-best 12.07 meters, falling just short of a berth into the finals.
The 4x400-meter relay team – consisting of freshmen Sarah Skogen and Melissa Turowski and sophomores Strange and Andrea March – set a new Elon top mark of 3:58.65 on its way to a fourth-place finish, less than one second shy of Chattanooga’s third-place finish for all-league accolades. The previous record of 4:00.51 was set back in the 2004-05 season by Rochelle Reid, Brittany Boda, Morgan Zech and Alice Turner.
Elon freshman Emily Fournier placed seventh in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:21.97. The Phoenix distance medley relay team of freshmen Catherine Rossi, Melissa Turowski, Taylor Shaw and Fournier finished sixth with a time of 12:42.75.
Phoenix freshman Veronica Day placed seventh in the long jump with a distance of 5.48 meters (17-11.75). Day ended up ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.34 meters (37-02.50), making the finals but falling one place short of scoring a point for the team.
