True but ASU is not their SoCon's exclusive partner...... our sports marketing in the Triad should soar. Very professionally done and takes us to a higher level.

EFF, not so fast on listening to them in Charlotte. They gotta get an affiliate in Greensboro first. WPCM doesn't count because you can hardly hear them at night.
Either way, this is huge. I think now, the goal should be get women's basketball away from WSOE and go FULL-SEASON baseball. Basically, do away with WSOE because that system doesn't work anymore. Biases aside, I'm surprised ISP would even allow WSOE to have games if they do.

I disagree with removing WSOE. While it's clear the announcers need more experience, they at least provide an outlet to here events locally that aren't currently on the radio.
I'd like to see the SChool of Communications come up with maybe a minor and get more students involved in covering athletic events. The Phoenix Weekly is fantastic.

Trust me on this...I ran the sports department at WSOE when I was there and the level of organization and morale has drastically dropped since I left. And even when we were at our highest level (2005-Spring 2007), if you compare this to where the department is now with ISP, just the marketing side alone would cause conflict. Something awful happens on the WSOE airwaves, ISP is going to have to separate itself from WSOE. Granted, WSOE is going to get far more flack, but the people that matter are gonna go to ISP first because you associate those guys with radio.
The other part of it is the person calling the shots. Nothing personal against the current operation, but the reason why they have fallen is because they have decreased their commitment, which was polar opposite of what I did and what Mike Demos did when he was there. WSOE decided NOT to do the Women's Basketball tourney, which was the first time since Elon starting playing in the Big South Tourney that WSOE was not there for the end of the women's basketball tourney. They also didn't get key road games on air like UNC and even UNCG was in doubt for a long time until the staff had to speak up.
During my time as the sports director and before I become that, we did baseball road games at Furman, Wofford, App, Western, UNCG, Davidson, UNC, NC State, Coastal, and South Carolina. (Not to mention the SoCon Tourney.) Granted, there are reasons beyond WSOE's control as to why they couldn't do those games, but I know 100% for certain, if given the opportunity, WSOE would probably go to one, maybe two of those places (UNCG---NOT even doing the entire series, and maybe UNC). I mean, for women's basketball, they went from 21 broadcasts in 06-07 to about 13. There is one rule in that business: When you increase a schedule, you NEVER EVER decrease it by more than one or two. Otherwise, you look bad. Period.
And it's all in the name of the fact that the man in charge of sports doesn't want to put the effort if the department can't fit them on the bus. WHO CARES! Be relentless. That's how the business is!
There is some talent at WSOE, but I can tell you that they are none to thrilled with the leadership and they haven't put forth the effort that they did when I was there and when Mike Demos was there. The experienced guys are the most furious.
All in all, WSOE's time is running out. If they were running better, then maybe WSOE could still be involved. But they screwed so much stuff up that they can't be taken seriously in the athletic department. Its' sad. I still have a lot of friends doing games there. I hear so much about how it sucks now.
If I'm ISP, I cut all ties with WSOE and get a Greensboro affiliate. Just in the advertising dollars alone, it makes sense.
As far as the Elon Phoenix Weekly is concerned, ISP does TV as well. I have to wonder if they'll take it off of a bad slot on ESPN 2 and put it at a better one on FSN or even the over-the-airs.

OTA, Without going into all of the reasons why, (that will just pizz off all of the A&T and UNCG fans parousing our board), I think that if we get a GSO broadcast affiliate, Elon may have the "IT" to become the top mid major/FCS school in the region, second only to the ACC schools. Have I had one too many margaritas tonight or am I on to something?

I say screw the Gboro radio affiliate, lets hook up to a huge satellite and have the first DEEP SPACE Radio affiliate. That way we can be the first to reach the martians. We could turn our practice field into a landing Zone and expand the stadium. I think if we play our cards right we could get the people of mars hooked on Elon Football and sell out the season. We could also expand the science building and add a few more programs, really apm up the graduate program.

EFF, now you are barking my language! Green women, espescially softball and tennis players, have always impressed me with their athletic prowess... Although, I would like to keep the IQ discussion as mum as possible. So, don't mention the graduate program!

Hey, if App can encroach our territory, I would imagine we could easily go into a territory that is "kinda sorta" ours. Why not get one in Greensboro? By the way, satellites cost money. ;D

I do feel like something needs to be done with broadcasting. I have no complaints about the quality of the football and basketball broadcasts (although it hurt to lose Alan Matthews - he was great), but something needs to be done about it for baseball. WSOE has two or three guys who really know how to broadcast, and I really enjoy listening to them. But then of course there is the majority of them, who really have no idea what they're talking about most of the time. And I'm not trying to lay into those guys, because I know WSOE broadcasts are all unpaid, and they're doing it because they've been presented with a cool opportunity. But it simply isn't as pleasant for the fans to listen to.
I wasn't extremely impressed with the WPCM broadcasts either this year. And again, I won't insult the broadcasters because I know that it isn't their #1 job, and they have no career aspirations of broadcasting (that I know of). But there were several instances in their broadcasts where they didn't seem to be able to provide the most useful commentary.
OTA, you are clearly the most familiar with the whole broadcasting process. What might be the likelihood of WPCM (or whoever broadcasts baseball next year) allowing the talented guys at WSOE broadcast on their network. I'm not sure, but some of those guys might be willing to do it for free, since that's what they've been doing with WSOE. Perhaps I am in the minority by thinking that WSOE's two or three best are better than WPCM's guys, but I think it would be a shame if the guys at WSOE didn't get an opportunity to showcase their talent, as they might be pursuing careers in the field. What are your thoughts on this?

I know a couple of those guys you are talking about....and yes they could do this if they were ran by ISP and not WSOE. With App, WASU has two students do the women's. One of them, fellow Page High School alum Drew Branyon, has done a lot with App AND the SoCon. He's done more than I did, but that's the perks of being on the App ISP Sports Networks.
It can happen. I mean, somebody needs to do full season women's bball....and if they want to do all 56 baseball games, you gotta get a team of four because Byron's schedule is very very rough and he can't do every one of those games...heck most mid-weeks would be a wash for him.
Right now, there is a need for a men's basketball play-by-play guy. Dave Hibbard is still on, for now, for football. With ISP, there is the chance they may want a full-timer. It all depends on what Dave Blank wants.
Honestly, though, we can build it like App has. With our commitment to communications at the school, that shouldn't be rocket science.
PCMs wasn't all that bad, but the problem is I don't think Elon took the broadcasts seriously, thus not giving Byron the consistent personnel he needs. Heck, Elon didn't even have their advertising on there. That may be a part of the Action Sports Media/ISP merger, though. I would imagine that next year, they will be taken a lot more seriously and give it the resources it needs.
