Kirby playing USF in his first game could end up being the best thing for him no matter the outcome. He'll be forced to step up right away and if he takes that and runs with it, it could be a promising season. I can't wait another 2 months...ugh.
Go Phoenix!

It might be better for Kirby to build some confidence vs some lower level competition - but we will see. I just hope the OL can give him some decent protetion.

Here is how I see things stacking up in the Conference at years end
1. Wofford 2. crAPP 3. El Cid 4. Furman 5. Elon 6. GSU 7. Chatt 8. WCU
I don't think crAPP is going to be able to run the table again this year. Wofford is already top 5 preseason according to Lindy's and they are returning a potent offense including RB K. Johnson and QB Collier. Nobody has really been able to figure out Ayers option. If you remember WoCo held crAPP to just 14 points up in Boone (14-7 final). They made us look stupid in October, I don't think we have the defense to shut them down (especially since NKang is gone). Furman is going through a reloading year but will still be powerful. El Cid is an interesting team that could beat up on some teams this season.
So what about the Phoenix? I also don't think that we have the talent yet to beat crAPP. With the game being at home during family weekend there is a chance that if people don't make their dinner reservations too early that there will be packed house and a possible close game with a lot of noise (Real football environment). We also don't have the defense to stop the option so don't think we can take a game in Spartanburg. Good news is I believe that we are actually going to win a Homecoming game this year; I don't think there is any chance for Chatt to turn things around in a year. We will beat WCU and with GSU being at home that should be in the win column as well. El Cid and Furman are going to be hard wins with the games being back to back on the road and El Cid is one of the harder venues to play in the league. Good news as well...we should get wins over WVW and Stony Brook should be our easy "W" game...Liberty I'm not going to touch.
I'm looking forward to making the Labor Weekend trip to Tampa. Raymond James is a fun stadium to watch a college football game and in case it hasn't been mentioned yet they do sell beer in the stadium since it's off campus (Or at least they did three years ago when i saw USF/Army). I can't wait for the football season to begin. Almost here and it should be another exciting one!!

Elon couldn't beat GSU with the worst head coach in the country. No chance in hell Elon wins this year when we have a capable coach at the helm.

Seems like a reasonable projection. I might flip Wofford and Furman and El Cid and GSU. Most Terrier fans agree we should be ranked #3 in the SOCON. We've only beaten FU twice in the past ten years. They have our number like we've had GSU's lately. I'd love for the drought to be over. Until it is, "We're number three"!

TerrierBob, You're right Furman has had the dogs number and your schedule is not easy by any means..especially since you're at FU and el cid. I think if ya'll can knock down App you'll have the confidence to really get after FU...they are don this year.

The SoCon is a hard one to pick this year. Most (including me) have App as the clear favorite. There is real potential for App to stumble, though. Playing away games at Wofford, Furman and The Citadel isn't an easy task, but I think we're up to it. We can't afford to take ANYONE for granted, though.
Picking the rest is tough! Most are under estimating Georgia Southern. I see many on this board have them at #6. The Mountaineer Message Board has similar projections. GSU will be a different team than they were last year. Yes, they have to install another new offense, but the morale will be MUCH better. Hatcher will have these guys fired up, and I doubt they are going to lay down for anyone. There is an aweful lot of talent and now they have a coach who will leverage off of their "tradition" to get the ball rolling.
Elon now has an excellent head coach also. Freshman QB's can often step up and handle the task (Armanti Edwards was a freshman last year at App). The transfer OL from Rutgers is a nice addition. Middle of the pack is very do-able. The days when Elon was a gimme are ending (maybe even over).
The SoCon is going to be a tougher conference this year than it was last year. Almost every single team seems to be showing a positive trend.
Wofford will be good, but don't kid yourself. App held App to 14 points last year. We played a very sloppy game, and Wofford is too good to let us get away with that. App still has a clear advantage in athleticism, though. Also, I think it's pretty obvious that App has no trouble with Wofford's option (7 points last year scored on a missed assignment).
Good luck until we meet in Boone!

Gotta Remember that Kirby is a Red-Shirt Freshman and was going to push Pope for playing time. He's also thrown to big time receivers Harvin at Uof F and our present corps of wide-outs know him and that means a whole lot!!! I think We are capable now with our talent and depth to be in every contest We will win our share.

I think we'll have a failry good season, compared to recent past years. The guys just weren't consistent last year.
With the transfers, A good QB that knows the system, a good core of LBs & DBs, 2 of the top WRs in the conference, I think we'll fair ok. I'm just a little worried about the running game again.
This team was fun to watch at times last year. I really like having 3 QBs on the field at all times on the offensive side of the ball. Throwing in the trick plays really keeps the D on their heels.

As a frequent reader and limited contributor to the board I always find the excitement and hoopla around "transfers" quite interesting. It seems that these transfers are viewed as saviours before they step foot on the practice field

I can relate to the statement by gaelonfan. People get really excited about the big IA/FBS transfers. I think that they can be a great quick solution to a specific need, but I don't think they are the way to build a program. Folks at App are exicted about the two transfers we're getting on defense (from LSU and Vandy) because that's where our need is. We have yet to see whether these guys will actually be the answer.
I would just point out that last year's GSU squad was loaded with talented transfers. Chattanooga has brought in tons of transfers for years and has yet to field a contender as a team.
The component that will make it work is leadership. I think Elon has that now in Lembo and will develop the field generals in time. GSU has it now (not last year) and so does The Citadel. That's why the conference is getting better as a whole.
WCU seems to be the only program remaining with little hope of improvement, but even they might surprise us.

I never think that transfers are a savior to any team, but much can be said about teams like App from last season. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Armanti Edwards a transfer from WCU?
