Adam Smith's latest completes staff was in Twitter Post www.goupstate.com/sports/20170131/coordinators-arrival-completes-elons-new-football-staffELON — Drew Folmar is on board as Elon’s offensive coordinator, meaning both of new coach Curt Cignetti’s top assistants come from upper-echelon Football Championship Subdivision programs that are recognized as traditional winners. Folmar, who will coach Elon’s quarterbacks in addition to his coordinating duties, spent the last three seasons at Lehigh in the same capacity and also has one year of head-coaching experience at Kutztown on the NCAA Division II level. Lehigh ranked sixth nationally in total offense under Folmar last season while going unbeaten in the Patriot League and reaching the FCS playoffs. Tony Trisciani, Elon’s new defensive coordinator, participated in the FCS playoffs last season with Villanova, one of the powers in Elon’s conference, the Colonial Athletic Association. Elon marks Folmar’s fourth stop as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, joining his brief stay at New Haven and five years at Kutztown (2008-12), before he became the head coach there in 2013. Kutztown competes in the same conference with Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the team that Cignetti led to a 53-17 record and three Division II playoff appearances during the past six seasons. Folmar’s offenses at Lehigh were high-powered. The Mountain Hawks produced more than 462 yards per game to lead the Patriot League in 2015. That output climbed to just shy of 484 yards per game in 2016, rating among the most prolific offenses across the FCS. Conversely, Elon’s struggling offense under former coach Rich Skrosky checked in as one of the nation’s worst last season, ranking 115th out of the 122 teams in the FCS. While Lehigh piled up 63 touchdowns on offense last season, Elon scored just 12. Along with Folmar’s arrival, Cignetti has completed his Elon coaching staff by hiring Matt Merritt (running backs coach and special teams coordinator), Ryan Smith (defensive backs coach) and Dillon Lucas (defensive assistant). Merritt spent last season as the running backs coach at Division II Ohio Dominican. Prior to that, he was an assistant running backs coach and offensive graduate assistant at Ohio State for three years. Smith has worked for Penn State and Texas San Antonio as a graduate assistant. He played cornerback in college at William & Mary, another of Elon’s CAA league mates. Lucas coached the linebackers last year at Moravian, a Division III program. He put together a standout playing career as a Villanova linebacker from 2011-15.

Reading through the new football staff bios now listed on elonphoenix.com, I am very impressed. Noticed that most are experienced as college coaches, and are from successful programs. What I really like is the new staff played the positions they will be coaching. I also like Coach Cignetti's philosophy of assessing the current players and building an offense around them while he builds the team to his ultimate offensive system. I am really happy with the OC and DC. Things looking very positive!
