So, we're a little over a week out from the start of the season....Elon at Georgia Tech (the real Tech as most ACC fans would say ) Let's hear some predictions, game thoughts etc. There hasn't seemed to be to much talk in the papers it seems from the coaches, players, etc.....or I just may not be paying attention. I'm anxious to see the adjustments made to stop the run, though playing GT may not be the best barometer for judgement. I'm equally as anxious to see the offense take the field, to see who will possibly be the leaders on the team and if our new WR will see much playing time. Has anyone read much about Vassey's switch to WR? Anyways, let's hear it!

Elon comes out on fire and Tech looks past them and The Big E pulls off the biggest upset since ( puke, puke ) Appy beat Michigan. Hey, might as well start the season thinking LARGE. Good Guys 35, the robot builders 31.

GT: As much as they want. EU: 0
It's going to be really ugly. I've made every FBS game that Elon has played the last few years. I will not be wasting my time with this one.

I don't think they will be as much into making a statement as UNC was last year, but we will be worse offensively than we were last year and only slightly better defensively. 42 - 6 maybe?

GT is not known for putting in reserves before 4th quarter even when up big.
This is going to be bad.
Look at UNC last year. And we had a better QB and a star receiver. UNC was a worse team. And on paper, we're not a better team.

This is the first year I will not be going to the FBS game for Elon since they started them......will watch it with some friends on ESPN 3 and hope for the best. But I agree with the above, Ga. Tech has a habit of scoring big in these types of games and after the Carolina debacle last year.......I think this is going to be bad. Hope we come out unhurt and can move on.....hope the money is worth it. Next year at Duke and the year after at Boston College hopefully will be more competitive. Prediction: Ga Tech 72 Elon 7. Hope I am wrong on this.

BIG LOSSES: QB Thomas Wilson (249-of-381, 3,161 yards, 25 TD, 10 INT) and WR Aaron Mellette (97 receptions, 1,408 yards, 18 TD)
2012 TEAM RANKINGS: Rushing Offense, 88.36 (113 in FCS, 9 in SoCon); Passing Offense, 296.73 (12 in FCS, 1 in SoCon); Total Offense, 385.09 (51 in FCS, 4 in SoCon); Scoring Offense, 24.27 (70 in FCS, 8 in SoCon); Rushing Defense, 229.55 (113 in FCS, 8 in SoCon); Passing Defense, 156.91 (5 in FCS, 1 in SoCon); Total Defense, 386.45 (71 in FCS, 6 in SoCon); Scoring Defense, 31.82 (95 in FCS, 8 in SoCon)
OUTLOOK: Swepson is still trying to get the Phoenix to a higher level after posting two straight losing seasons. This is their final season in the SoCon before moving to the Colonial Athletic Association. They appear to be building toward a better 2014, especially with the young offense returning only four starters. Quinn, last year's backup quarterback, played in four games as a sophomore and indicated he is ready for a bigger role. He won't be throwing the ball to Mellette, the two-time All-American, but Brown and Rorie will improve their numbers. The Phoenix struggled to stop the run, which in turn helped them to allow a SoCon-low 156.9 passing yards per game. Their veteran secondary should be strong again. The defensive leader, though, is Spain, whose 118 tackles were the fourth-most in the program's single-season history.
SCHEDULE:
Aug. 31 - at Georgia Tech
Sept. 7 - vs. West Virginia Wesleyan
Sept. 14 - at North Carolina A&T
Sept. 21 - vs. Appalachian State

I'm not a big fan of playing the 1-A schools because it's not worth losing players to injuries in a game that we have little chance of winning. I attended the Wake game a few years ago when we were a competitve team; thinking we could pull off an upset but still lost 35-7. The UNC game was a total disaster plus it had to have been close to 100 degrees at game time. My wife and I had to leave our seats before the end of the 1st quarter because of the heat. At least the Wake game was at night.
Go Phoenix!!

This risks injury to the individuals and the team, but $450k goes a long way toward helping our program.

Hey Guys - Thought I'd give my 2 cents from a GT perspective here.
Some things to consider: -Our back up QB may sit out this game and our 3rd string, while capable is a non-scholarship player.
-Our O-Line is pretty banged up and will not be starting with what our starting 5 should be. More than likely 2 players will be out and 1 will be playing out of position.
-It is our QBs first start, though he's had a bunch of playing time and as a whole our fanbase thinks he may be the best QB we've had in over a decade.
-We have 1 WR with any career catches and I think he has 6.
-We will always put up a ton of yards on the ground.
-Our defense has been horrendous the last few years. With a new DC and a simplified defense, all reports are pointing to it being much improved this year. Although how much remains to be seen. For comparative purposes, I don't believe they will be as good as UNC last year. They are all healthy except for one safety, but we are especially deep at that position.
-Special teams has also been abysmal the last few years, but with a very highly rated kicker coming in and starting as a true freshman, supposedly our kicking woes are over.
In summary - Our offense will generally score points regardless if we're missing a few starters here and there and as long as SOMEBODY can catch the ball. However, this won't be the potent offense that you might see 3 or 4 games into the season when they're in a groove and have everyone back healthy. I think Coach Johnson will pull his remaining 2 or 3 starting lineman before halftime to prevent further injury and get the backups as many game reps as possible. Expect our starting qb to play the entire first half (or split reps throughout the first half if the backup is available) and maybe the first series of the 2nd half if the game seems to be in hand by then. The defense will be learning a new scheme and will probably use this game to try out a variety of plays which leaves the door open for some big plays by the Elon offense. Expect a heavy rotation of defensive players throughout the game with starters getting the majority of the snaps probably through the 3rd quarter. At the end of the day, GT wins big, but not UNC big.

gtmike, take a look at Elon stats from last season. They couldn't stop the run, much less the option.
The team does have a new DC, so hopefully he's been able to make up some good ground.
This will also be our QB's first start, though he does have some playing experience in a back up role over the last 2 seasons.
