That's right Elon fans, a 31 point loss to UNCG. Very hard to know what to say. We looked like the better debating team on the court tonight, but that's the only positive thing I can say.

I would think you could take 5 football players over there and do better 31 points.

And for the record we beat UNCG by 10 two years ago.
Honest question. Are we moving forward or regressing?

I was driving home from a work Christmas party tonight and I asked my wife to check the final score of the game on ESPN. She said the score was 77- 44, and I assumed the app was broken or not updating correctly. However, I was wrong....this is a new low.

I am beyond frustrated with this team. Was Luke Eddy that much of a difference maker last year? Seems Siebring and Santa Anna have regressed. Swoop is a scoring point who does not distribute well. Our bench outside of Eberhart is non existent. We consistently are playing teams that are physically more talented and our "system" in 9 years had produced a mediocre product. I like Matt and the staff....all great guys. But if he can not turn this around this season.....we should move in a new direction to open the Schar. Someone said it earlier.....this has the same feel as the Senior year of the Troutman, Koch, Beaumont, Eisenberg year.....big expectations and a huge letdown in results. The UNCG game was a joke. We were out manned, out hustled and out coached.

I heard commentary from Coach Matheny that he recruits "shooters" to be a part of the "system". Personally, I would say that in order to be classified as a "shooter", one should be able to hit a minimum of 45% beyond the arc, on average, 60% inside the arc and 85% or better at the foul line. I'm not sure we have any of those. I could be wrong, but I don't see any of those coming in our current verbal commits or LOI's. Irrespective of a system change or other change, we are likely to see more of the same for a couple of years.

Thank heavens I didn't watch the game. I almost fell victim to believing we couldn't lose to UNCG because we had their number. Elon snapped a 12 straight game win streak vs crosstown rival UNCG since 2009 all under Coach Matheny. I have actually witnessed most of them. I felt this was job security for him. Does a real woodshed beat down erase all previous success of past seasons?

Does a real woodshed beat down erase all previous success of past seasons? I would say no, and with that I will say that there is no one cheering harder for Matt than me. However, the statement above "...our "system" in 9 years had produced a mediocre product." is undeniable. A team that's picked 2nd in the CAA shouldn't be losing to teams like UNCG and Furman, and shouldn't be going into overtime against teams like St. Peter's and FIU. Especially considering we have all our starters back from last year. The performance of this team in the early season is very reminiscent of the 13-14 season where we were picked to win the SoCon going away. The result was a 4th place finish in the SoCon with a 38 point loss to #7 Duke and a 1st round SoCon Tournament loss to WCU, the eventual 5th place team. I like Matt and don't want another coach. But I like Elon Basketball more and simply want the best for the program. I have high expectations for the program and Matt. BTW, I have attended every game between UNCG and Elon since 2003 until last night. Maybe the loss is my fault for not being there.

A truly pathetic performance last night. And as others have mentioned, we haven’t had a truly good game yet this year. There needs to be incredible improvement quickly or this season will quickly become another 18-14 job and in the middle of the CAA (like 2014 in the So Con).
The most depressing thing is I am resigned to the fact nothing will change. I am depressed because I constantly hear about people rooting for Matheny and what a great guy he is, both of which are seemingly true. But I don’t understand, is he the only basketball coach on planet earth that is a great guy and can represent the school well? And why are people so defensive of him? Are they that scared of change like we will immediately hire some Rick Pitino type who will disgrace us all? The bottom line is he doesn’t get the results on the court and keeps trying the same faulty formula. And I don’t have unrealistic expectations. But I do expect more than he has displayed in a decade. His resume of accomplishments in that timeframe is a book in mediocrity at best.

Given the fact that we've got a volleyball coach that's 13-52 in conference the past 4 seasons and a women's soccer coach that is 6-24-6 in the CAA and both are still here means Matheny is probably viewed as successful by Blank. He's definitely better than Nestor, but it's clear he has a ceiling.
I also don't get the loyalty thing to Matheny. I think most just like him as a person, so it's tough to want him gone. Let's face it though, if he was having success and McKillop retired, he'd be gone in a heartbeat. So not sure why we should feel any commitment on our end.
I assume this UNCG game was a front end of a home and home, so hopefully they don't come in and repeat this in the brand new Schar Center next year.
Go Phoenix!

If you want more of the same, keep Matheny. 2012-2013 is the best it will ever be. Getting Lucas Troutman to Elon was the best thing Matheny’s done since he’s been here. So reasonably, last year is about the best you will ever see under Matheny. It’s the “system “, and it’s all he knows.

Played with no toughness, played with little heart. Two things we brought to every game last year. Frustration & player egos are going to keep us from winning games. I don't blame the coaches, but then again the coaches did recruit the players? Players caring to much about themselves, and players that simply cannot play. I see a lot of problems, hoping we get this turned around. With our schedule 6-4 in dissapointing, but I'm staying behind them you guys should as well, Let's Go Phoenix!!!

Egos? Did you say EGOS? There's not one player on this team that has the faint right to have an ego issue! The ONLY strength this team has is to play together. If this is a problem, well, we have a multitude of problems. Who in the world, on this team thinks he has a right to have an inflated ego? Wow...
