I've started to hear rumblings of Coach Schrage going to Duke as as Assistant. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Devastating for the program. I’d imagine half of our current team ends up in the portal. We will have to piece together a roster of misfits we can wrangle in this new age of unrestricted free agency in college sports... I foresee this leading to a few more years of challenges.
Had heard rumors of this over the weekend from an inside source. Refused to believe it. Sounds like the administration, namely Emperor Book, was unwilling to make the necessary accommodations and long-term commitments to retain coach. Really appalled by our lack of leadership.
I have a hard time believing we bring in a staff of similar quality. Time to prepare for a return of the old days where mediocrity is the best case scenario.
Off I go to find my way to the bottom of the bottle.

I am not sure about devastating…. I question Schrage’s ability to be a great coach. He had way better talent than Mathney ever dreamed of having but Mathney never had the bad season Schrage just had. And even the COVID year was awful. This team had a great amount of talent yet we put up like 10 wins. You can blame some on the Power 5 Schools but we lost games to teams we should not of lost two and got blown out in way to many conference games. We were already losing Ervin and Woods but those were the two most disappointing players on the team this year. I’m sure we will lose a few players but most of these guys couple of went to a lot better conditions to start with. Perhaps they were sold on the University. We will have to wait and see what happens. To be honest maybe they were frustrated with the coaching as well. I had hoped Schrage was the answer but it was obvious he was not: one fear I had when he came in was Why did it take him so long to land a head coaching job ? Maybe now we know. He was a great recruiter but I think lacks coaching skills. You can disagree but there is no reason we were as bad we we were with the players and talent we had. I guess we sit back now and see how the Dominos fall. Look at Charleston. Only returned 2 players from last years squad and had a better seaso. Then we just came off of. The portal is unpredictable so anything can happen.

Associate Athletic Director Matt Ward is also leaving. Not a banner day for Elon Athletics.

Hi All, Very disappointing day for Elon athletics. But with every vacancy comes a new opportunity. We’ve suffered too long with subpar coaching and Schrage couldn’t maximize our talent this past year although maybe the best we’ve had in quite some time.
Matheny mismanaged some of our programs best players for years relegating great players to the 3pt line when their strengths are in the post like Brian Dawkins or Tyler Seibring the midrange assassin. If Elon will ever dream to think of filling the Schar Center like it was for that Elon UNC game they need to think outside the box and big to breathe some energy back into this team.
As they go out into market and look for a new coach they have to realize that hope is bleak and you might want to take some big risks and take a flyer on a young guy. There’s a coach Ryan Bernardi only a near 10-15 min drive down the road at The Burlington School who went to Elon, has some passion for the program and runs an offense that guys actually will want to come and play for (wow what a revelation that is). He’s won multiple titles and has one of the best teams in NC.
Only reason they won’t consider him is the date on his birth certificate. Don’t think he’ll be considered and we’ll end up with some old white guy that’s been an assistant for 20 years just like we always do. Glad the Schar Center is so nice for the 200 people in there for every game. I’m sure the recruits will all be impressed by that. Cheers

Frank Haith is available. What are the chances his agent has already made the call I don't think I could get excited about that, to be honest. I'll admit I'm only just now learning that he went to Elon.

Sort of a similar addition via subtraction when Shrosky left in Football for asst. FAU.as for Schrage Duke assistant role is a good place for him. Think we can coax Roy Williams out of retirement?

I'll admit I'm only just now learning that he went to Elon. If Haith is interested, you do that in a heartbeat. Realistically we're looking at another up and coming assistant looking for his first head coaching gig.

All time beta move by Schrage. Talks about creating a family at Elon, underachieves as a head coach, and then tucks his tail between his leg to take a demotion (albeit well-paying one) to become an assistant. My first reaction was shock and disappointment, but I think this move cements the fact he was not cut out to be a successful coach. His teams underachieved every regular season. This years team vastly underachieved and was reminiscent of a Matheny team. The transfers he brought in were bad. He’s had four of his own recruits transfer out in three years. His best players plateaued. Good riddance and I hope whatever raise you got from your demotion you pay out to your assistants you left out to dry.
Bring home Frank. I don’t give a crap about PR. I don’t give a crap he’s ridden with scandals. Guess what the NCAA doesn’t care anymore either. Can’t take down a banner if you don’t have one. I visited Elon for the first time in five years this past weekend and despite all the new buildings and bells and whistles their is one thing the campus doesn’t have: Swagger. You can’t build swagger. Guess who has swagger. Frank Haith. He is what he is. He can win the CAA. He can raid the transfer portal and get a competitive team. He can recruit the southeast. I’m tired of watching an athletics program fail and fail boringly. Elon has no personality when it comes to their team (and university but that’s a different rant). Dave Blank swallow your pride, tell President Book and the rest of administration to quit kissing the a$$es of much more prestigious private schools just do the can be mentioned in the same breath as them and hire Frank. If not, we are coming for you. You can’t keep failing as an AD and keep your job. Bonus point - I will personally contribute to the university’s compliance department if it means we hire Frank.

Wow, kind of surprised but good riddance. This is why when a coach is hired you take everything they say with a grain of salt. 95% are cut from the same cloth.
Let's face it, he was gone as soon as he had any success, but it was starting to look like he was in over his head and he probably knew it. We were going to be starting over at some point and now may be the best time with the transfer portal the way it is.
Just looked at his win/loss numbers. He was 33-52 in 3 seasons. 27-52 minus non D1 wins.
Make a big move. No more guys with no head coaching experience.
Go Phoenix!

Absolutely on board with hiring Frank Haith...bring the prodigal son home! He actually has a local basketball court named for him in the neighborhood past Trollinger apartments. He may have had a pricier contract at Tulsa, but that ended in his resignation. I think he could be interested in a hometown discount...
